Builder: Good with Wood
Featured in Habitus Magazine Issue 46.
This modest structure was designed as a workspace and storage area with celebrated designer Trent Jansen. Based in Thirroul, Jansen is known for creating deeply considered objects that explore cultural narratives through collaborative and anthropological design methods.
The building’s form is purposeful and restrained, shaped by materials chosen for their durability and strong connection to place. Recycled galvanised steel cladding wraps the exterior, its weathered texture echoing the utilitarian sheds found throughout the region. Polished concrete floors provide a robust and practical surface for making and storage, while precast concrete sleepers anchor the studio with a quiet and grounded presence.
Passive solar principles guide the orientation and openings, allowing light and warmth to animate the interior throughout the day. The studio supports Jansen’s practice in both practical and philosophical terms, offering a stable and enduring backdrop for creative exploration.
The project reflects Jansen’s commitment to Designing with Country and working in respectful collaboration with Indigenous artists and communities. It is a structure that sits gently in the landscape, quietly supporting a design practice that continues to shape and challenge contemporary Australian design identity.
